MADIKERI, NOV. 16. Gangling Utsav Prakash, men's top seed from Bangalore, drubbed Varun Bhat, also from Bangalore, 15-4, 15-2 to enter the last eight in the State badminton championships being played at the North Coorg Club premises here on Tuesday.
The second seed Shiva Prakash was stretched to three games by his opponent Saquib Ilyas. Shiva Prakash lost the third game to post a 15-7, 9-15, 15-4 win. Rohan Castelino, a former national junior champion and seeded third here also made it to last eight by thrashing P.Raghavan in two straight games 15-5, 15-3. Fourth seed Ajit Wijayatilak beat Anil Pradhan 15-10, 15-7 to enter quarterfinals. Others who made it to the last eight grade were, J.R.Srinath, who beat C.S.Darshan, a local lad, 15-2, 15-9, Adip Naik who beat Jagadish Yadav 15-10, 15-4, Vinay Dev who beat Sunil Gladson 15-7, 15-10, Shashank Sastry who got the better of Xavier Raphael 15-3, 15-7. In the men's doubles event, Rohan Castelino partnering Saquib Ilyas overcame the challenge of Yogesh and Raghavendra 15-12, 15-4, J.R.Srinath and Varun Bhat beat Prashant and Muthappa 15-9, 15-8 and C.S. Darshan and Jagdish Yadav put paid to the hopes of P.Raghavan and Prakash 15-9, 15-8. In the mixed doubles events, Rohan Castelino and Varsha Belavadi defeated P.Raghavan and P.Amitha 15-5, 15-7 while Saquib Ilyas and Adfa Taqvi overcame anxious moments to beat Sunil G. and Roopa P. 15-10, 15-13. Among the veterans (plus 45), six-time State champion K.P.Vasant Kumar defeated Alagachar in two straight games.
