Balkishan wins title

MYSORE, NOV. 16. Local lad A. Balkishan won the boys' under-13 title in the Sri Srikantavarshani Venkatakrishna Memorial State under-13 chess championship that concluded here on Tuesday.

He was tied with G.A. Stany (Shimoga) and Anil S. Shetty (Shimoga) with seven points from eight rounds but won on the basis of his better progressive score.

In the girls' section, Shruthi K. of Theerthahalli with 5 points and a progressive score of 19 won the title.

K. Manasa (Mangalore) with five points and a progressive score of 18.5 took the second place.

The top two players in the boys and girls' section were selected to represent the State in the National under-13 chess championship to be held at Vijayawada in December.

The final placings:

Boys: 1. A. Balkishan (7 points - 34), 2. G.A. Stany (7 - 33), 3. Anil S. Shetty (7 - 31), 4. Kedar Umesh Vaze (6 - 26.5), 5. B.S. Srinidhi (6 - 26), 6. S. Yogesh (5.5 - 27), 7. K. Avinash (5.5 - 24.5), G. Shashank (5.5 - 23).

Girls: 1. K. Shruthi (5 - 19), 2. K. Manasa (5 - 18.5), 3. Soumya Vaze (4.5 - 17.5), 4. Shrishti Shetty (4.5 - 17), 5. Iara Pinto (4.5 - 14), 6. Meghana R. Deshmukh (4 - 14).

The results:

Boys: eighth round: Anil S. Shetty bt Yogesh; G.A. Stany bt Prajwal D'Silva; Viani D'Cuna lost to A. Balkishan; Kedar Umesh Vaze bt Abhijith S.P.; B.S. Srinidhi bt Sanjay; Sunil S. Shetty drew with Shashank G.; Prajwal drew with Sai Prasanth; S. Venkataraman lost to K. Avinash.

Girls: sixth round: K. Shruthi drew with Soumya U. Vaze; Meghana R. Deshmukh lost to K. Manasa; S. Priyanka lost to Shrishti Shetty; Iara Pinto bt G. Anusha; S. Suraksha drew with Akshatha Bhat; Sneha V. Karekar lost to Hiteshi; Shravya lost to Pragna D'Silva.
