Srinivas smashes meet record

BANGALORE, NOV.16 The National stars, Srinand Srinivas, Shikha Tandon and Puneet Rana held the sway on the opening day of the All India inter-university aquatic championship which got underway at the BAC pool here on Tuesday.

Sriniand Srinivas, representing the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences smashed meet marks in the men's 400 metre freestyle and 200 m backstroke events. Srinivas, who led all the way in the 400 race, hit the board at 4:25.71, thus bettering the meet mark of 4:28.20 held by Rahul Batra of the VTU since 2002.

In the 200 m back stroke, Srinivas swam a brisk 2:20.84, sinking an eight year old mark of Sandeep Kakar of the Delhi University.

The National breaststroke champion, Puneet Rana of Punajb University cut down the field with a splendid 2:29.90, thus improving his own meet mark by nearly six seconds.

In the women's section, Shikha Tandon won both the 800 metres (9:57.71) and 100 m backstroke

(1:09.51) events with new meet records.

Earlier, the Chief Minsiter, N. Dharam Singh, inaugurated the championship.
