Ravneet Ricky cracks century

AMRITSAR, NOV. 16. A fine century by opener Ravneet Ricky and his 124-run third-wicket stand with Pankaj Dharmani helped Punjab make 279 for three on the opening day of its Ranji Trophy Elite group `B' match against Assam here on Tuesday.

Opting to bat, Punjab progressed steadily before Reetinder Sodhi (34) fell to R. Sathish with the total on 97.

Yuvraj Singh (29) did not last long either, caught by S.V. Saravanan off Konwar with score on 155.

Thereafter Ricky and Dharmani tamed the Assam attack, before the former fell, caught by Zuffri off P.K. Das.

Tejinder scores 86

Tejinder Pal Singh struck a neat 86 on a damp Karnail Singh pitch in Delhi as Railways ran up 305 for nine on the opening day of its Elite `A' contest against Bengal.

The early dismissal of skipper Sanjay Bangar notwithstanding, Railways, put in, benefited from some lacklustre bowling, which failed to exploit the seamer-friendly conditions.

Amit Pagnis (57) and Tejinder played carefully to take the score to 110 for one at lunch, but Railways slumped from 129 for one to 187 for five. However, J.P. Yadav (69 batting) steadied the ship.

Mota's impressive debut

At the Wankhede Stadium, seamer Wilkin Mota made an impressive debut for host and defending champion Mumbai, taking three wickets for 21 in 11. 1 overs in its Elite `A' match against Madhya Pradesh.

Put in, the visitor was 164 for seven at stumps.
