New scheme to develop wastelands

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, NOV. 16. The `Indira Prabha' Comprehensive Land Development Programme, meant to benefit 3,772 downtrodden families, by allotment of 10,043 hectares of land in the district, will be launched on November 19, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, the Joint Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, said on Tuesday. Addressing a workshop here, she said the programme envisaged development of waste lands by utilising them for cultivation and non-agricultural purposes. A district-level committee would monitor and sanction works.

The Cuddapah MLA, Md. Ahmedullah, wanted active involvement of the poor in the programme. Lands must be made fit for cultivation and given to poor beneficiaries, the Lakkireddipalle MLA, G. Mohan Reddy, said. He suggested sanction of tractors to beneficiaries and strict ban on use of machinery for levelling lands.

Beneficiaries keen on cultivating lands should be preferred and they must be assisted on a continuous basis, said the Badvel MLA, D.C. Govinda Reddy.
