CHENNAI, NOV. 16. Two hundis were broken open at a Jain Temple and contributions, including currency and coins, looted in Vepery last night. Based on the watchman's account, police suspect that an intruder could have climbed over one of the temple gates to gain entry. After breaking open the hundis, the intruder is thought to have climbed to the first floor, which has two more hundis. One of the three watchmen on duty went to the first floor on hearing some noise. This prompted the intruder to get out and escape on a waiting motorcycle. About a month ago, a youth who barged into the temple and tried to break open a hundi during the daytime was caught and handed over to police and was later let off.
Body found
The body of a young man was found floating in an abandoned water tank in West Mambalam today. Kumaran Nagar police, who were tipped off about the body by a resident, suspect that it must have been there for more than a week given its highly decomposed state.
