And now, a diploma in internal audit

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, NOV. 16. The quality of non-formal education should be on par with formal education and moreover, it should be useful to the stakeholders, S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Madras University, said here today.

Inaugurating a six-month Diploma course in Internal Audit, he said educational institutions should strive to provide "community utilisable higher education" to students to make them employable. The students should also realise the importance of specialising in a particular subject to increase their employability.

The structure of the new diploma course favoured professionals employed in corporate houses as well as students doing their Masters in the University. "A cafeteria of courses are available at the University and students enrolled in two-year post graduate courses at the University can also take up a parallel part-time course. The University offers 54 diploma courses under the choice-based credit system," Prof. Thyagarajan added.

R. Lakshmi Ratan, president, Institute of Internal Auditors-India, said internal auditing was an independent objective evaluation and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organisation's operations.

It helped bringing in a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management controls and governance processes. He announced the establishment of an endowment in his name for the best outgoing student in the course.

M. Ranganathan, head, Commerce department, said the four-paper course, spread over six months with 12 credits, would provide an impetus to graduates and professionals in the field.

M. Rajeshwaran, General Manager, EID Parry, said the programme was more a knowledge-sharing course rather than being a mere course leading to a job.
