Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, NOV. 16. The Mangalore Taluk Panchayat on Tuesday took a serious view of the absence of officials from its meeting. It resolved to send a stern warning to the Executive Officer asking him to ensure that the officials were present at meetings. T.S. Savitha, panchayat president, raised the issue during the question hour of the general body meeting. She said that the members were unable to elicit answers on various issues raised at the last meeting because of the absence of the officials. This would result in decisions being taken without studying the relevant data. It was vital that the officials were present at the meeting to give information to the members when they asked for it. The members brought to the notice of the president that many gram panchayats were unable to identify the beneficiaries for issuing new ration cards in the absence of the order giving effect to the taluk panchayat resolution passed in the last meeting. Many gram panchayats in the taluk had probable beneficiaries in good numbers and they were all clamouring for ration cards, but in the absence of the notification they did not get cards. In his reply, the tahsildar reiterated that there was no order on this issue from the Government and he had written to the Government on the matter. The meeting took notice of the illegal occupation of government land earmarked for various facilities in different gram panchayat limits and the direction given to the tahsildar that all those encroachments should be cleared in case the gram panchayat wanted to develop that piece of land.
