MANGALORE, NOV. 16. "Each and every home should have a library. Books are the windows to the outside world; it is through them that we get our first glimpse of other cultures, traditions and lifestyles. And the kind of books we read reflects our personality," Vaman Nandavar, outgoing president of Tulu Sahitya Academy, said here on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a function got up to mark the beginning of National Library Week at the City Central Library.

Mr. Nandavar appreciated the efforts of the staff of the City Central Library in maintaining the premises.

"The Mangalore City Central Library has been recognised as a model library at the national level. It is a tribute to the efforts of the chief librarian, Virupakshappa, and his staff," he said. The regular mobile library service offered by the City Central Library in various areas in the city had contributed to the library being recognised at the national level, Mr. Nandavar said.

The National Library Week, being observed from November 14, is aimed at creating awareness about libraries among the public.

The advantages of inculcating a good reading habit in children were many. It should be initiated in children from an early age as it would increase their grasping power, said Mr. Nandavar. Suresh Ballal, former president of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA); Dinesh Kumar Alva, member of Karnataka Library Authority; M.K. Bandi, librarian of Mangalore University; Ramalinga Gowda, district publicity officer; Prabhakar Neeramarga, Assistant Registrar of Mangalore University; and Sara Aboobakkar, eminent writer, were chief guests. A weeklong book exhibition has been organised to mark the occasion.
