Moodbidri to host major literary conference

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 16. A literary conference, "Alvas Nudisiri 2004'', organised by Alvas' Education Foundation, Moodbidri, in connection with the decennial celebrations of Alvas' Educational Institutions, will be held at the "Jain Kashi of the South" from December 16.

Chandrashekar Patil, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, will inaugurate the conference, which will be organised annually by the foundation at Moodbidri.

M. Mohan Alva, foundation director, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the conference would deal with "Kannada Psyche: literary, cultural challenges'' in its inaugural year.

Baragur Ramachandrappa, former chairman of Kannada Development Authority, would preside over the conference. He said the organisers expected nearly 2,500 delegates from all over the country. He brushed aside suggestions that it was an attempt to organise a parallel "Sahitya Sammelan."

Dr. Alva said eminent scholars would present three papers in every session.

There would be a special session on different dialects of Kannada as spoken in Dharwad, Mysore and Mangalore. This would give the delegates an opportunity to savour the diversity of the language, he said.

Dr. Alva said the organisers had decided to honour people who had made an outstanding contribution to the field of literature, language, organisation, folklore, research, and light music at the valedictory function. He said litterateur Ham. Pa. Nagarajaiah would deliver the valedictory address.

The organisers had decided to allow two student delegates of pre-university colleges to attend the conference for free.

The heads of colleges should send the names of the students to the organisers in advance, he said. Arrangements had been made to provide free boarding and lodging to delegates.

The organisers had decided to collect Rs. 100 as delegate fees. The delegates could exchange the receipt for a book of the same value at the bookstalls.

Only publishers who registered in advance would be permitted to display and sell books at the exhibition, he said.

Those interested in participating in the conference can contact Alvas Education Foundation, Sundari Anand Alva campus, Moodbidri 575227 (ph: 08258-238104/011 or fax: 236731).
