A well-planned conspiracy: VHP

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, NOV. 16 . The international vice-president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, S. Vedantam, today alleged that a group of vested interests was behind the "unwanted incident" [the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya] to damage the image of the Kanchi Mutt.

With Assembly elections round the corner in some northern States and Tamil Nadu, these groups vied with each other to project themselves as "torch-bearers of secularism," Mr. Vedantam told reporters.

On whether he was trying to say that both the AIADMK and the DMK had come together to "hatch" a plot against the mutt, he replied in the affirmative. He said that lawyers of both the parties at the Madras High Court had joined together in opposing the bail application moved on behalf of the Kanchi Acharya last Friday.

Even now the documents, which the respondents were entitled to, had not been provided to them. Also, except the Hindu organisations, no one has protested against the manner in which the Acharya was taken into custody during which the law-enforcing machinery had committed a series of human rights violations.
