By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, NOV.16. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 30.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22.4 degrees Celsius. The Madurai Airport recorded 1.7 mm of rainfall.

Documents submitted

Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today submitted in a Madurai court documents seized from the premises of a Madurai-based businessman involved in a multi-crore sales tax scam.

According to sources, the documents contained details of movable and immovable property owned by the businessman, which was seized during a raid on his house and other property here on Saturday. The documents were handed over in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.

Agitation criticised

The Consortium for Consumer Justice, Madurai-based NGO, has criticised the agitation staged by various political parties in protest against the hike in prices of petroleum products as a gimmick.

Citing the judgments of the High Courts and the Supreme Court, the CCJ has urged the parties to change their method of protests so that the consumer citizens' rights were not infringed upon.

`Founding Day' celebrated

Good physical and mental health is the key to a happy life, said Kalavathy Ponniraivan, Dean, Government Rajaji Hospital and Madurai Medical College.

Speaking at a function organised to mark the Kalanjiyam self-help group organisation founding day and the second anniversary of the Sellur unit of the organisation, she said that the Kalanjiyam should form a special wing to spread these ideals.

Chinnapillai, recipient of the Stree Shakthi Puraskar, presided over the function.

Earlier, the members took out an anti-usury rally. Fathima Rohini, Inspector of police, All Women Police Station, Tallakulam, flagged off the rally.

Demonstration

Advocates belonging to various parties staged a demonstration in front of the district court premises here today, condemning the attack on some lawyers on the Madras High Court premises when the bail petition of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Mutt came up for hearing recently.

The advocates owing allegiance to different parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Dravidar Kazhagam and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) raised slogans that the Acharya should not be given any special treatment.

Three held

Three members of the Revolutionary Students' Youth Federation were arrested for pasting posters at public places against Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. They were later released on bail, the police said.
