By Our Staff Reporter
GUNTUR, NOV. 16. Archakas of several temples in Guntur city and Tenali took out rallies on Tuesday protesting against the arrest of Kanchi Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswati, and closed temples after the morning puja at Tenali in Guntur district. The archakas under the banner of the Hindu Dharma Parirakshana Samiti took out a rally in Guntur from Brundavan Gardens to Arundelpet demanding the immediate release of the Sankaracharya.
Slokas chanted
They chanted slokas praying to God for the well being of the Sankaracharya. The samiti members drawn from the BJP, RSS and VHP criticised the police for not allowing the seer to cook food. "It is ridiculous on the part of the Public Prosecutor to say that the Government did not want to take the risk of food poisoning," they said. Potest rallies and dharnas would continue till tomorrow, they said and added that the future course of action would be decided depending on the court order on bail petition of the swami. About 100 people participated in the rally shouting slogans against the DMK leader, K. Karunanidhi.
Eye hospital
The Sankara Eye Hospital on the city outskirts which was inaugurated by Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswati, in March is functioning normally. There were no specific instructions from its parent trust managing the hospitals at Coimbatore and Guntur to make even a token protest. Hndreds of out patients visited the 125-bed hospital at Pedakakani.
Sunday camps
The Sunday eye camps are also being continued as usual. The staff members are unhappy with the turn of the events, and believe the Sankaracharya was innocent and that he will be released soon. Work at the hospital was something to do with human beings, so it could not be suspended, the hospital authorities said.
