Dangerous well Sir, At Valayaduppu, a village in Musiri taluk, the common well, not used for the past five years, has become polluted. The residents appealed to the Collector to take steps for closing the well to prevent the outbreak of diseases, but no action was taken. Will the authorities concerned do the needful? V.T.Venkatachalam, Valayaduppu, Tiruchi dt. Fertilizer scarcity Sir Following the good rain, farm activities are in full swing in the Cauvery delta area. However, fertilizer and other inputs are scarce, and are being sold in the black market at exorbitant prices. The farmers, who suffered a lot during the last three years of drought, find it difficult to get inputs. The Central Government has banned the import of urea and fertilizer during the demand period. The industries have refused to increase production because of lack of profits. Hence, the Government should allow free import of fertilizer. Ansar, Tiruchi. Poor drainage system Sir This is with reference to the report, `Measures to tackle flood discussed' (November 8). Quite often, floods in the city are caused by lack of proper drainage system and blockage of storm water drains. Even in posh localities like Thillainagar, rainwater stagnates. The drainages were constructed way back in 1968, and most of them are in disuse, being blocked by silt. Hence, the Corporation should construct open drainages in all areas. A.V. Narayanan, Tiruchi. Bank loans Sir The State Bank of India and other nationalised banks neglect petty traders and poor farmers while advancing loans. The SBI's Agriculture Development Bank branch in Madurai has lent a loan of Rs.5, 000 to 72 poor farmers/ traders of the farmers' market at Chokikulam, to protect them from the clutches of usurers. The banks which are vying with one another to sanction car loans can also think of giving cycle loans to the poor. R.S. Moorthy, Tiruchi. Roofless cycle stand Sir After the Government banned the use of thatched roofs in public places, the roof of the municipal cycle stand at Kumbakonam was removed, but the municipality is yet to replace it with an asbestos roof, forcing the commuters to park their vehicles in the open. As it collects parking fees, the civic body is duty-bound to provide shelter for the vehicles. R. Jayasankar, Kumbakonam.
Valayaduppu, Tiruchi dt.
