COIMBATORE, NOV. 16. The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has drawn the attention of the Government towards the practice of getting name boards of Government offices sponsored by private commercial establishments. In a memorandum to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, the secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has pointed out that "of late in Coimbatore, we come across many name boards in different Government offices, sponsored by various trading and commercial establishments". Name boards of police stations, taluk offices, RDO, RTO offices, fire service stations etc. were sponsored by the commercial establishments whose names, in most cases, appear more prominently than the names of Government departments. The layout, pattern and colours used in these name boards do not conform to any fixed norms. On many occasions, the public who look at these boards get the impression that the premises on which these boards are displayed house the commercial establishments rather than the Government offices. In most of the cases, these boards failed to display the Government emblem or the Department emblem. "We do not think that the Government can save substantial amount of money by allowing these commercial sponsors to display such name boards. On the other hand such display will spoil the image of Government offices." Hence, the CCC has appealed to the Chief Secretary to dispense with the present arrangement and initiate steps for display of name boards with the State emblem/department emblem, without any messages/advertisements of sponsors. The Government could also think of bringing in some uniformity in name boards.
