THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 16. The police have arrested a 28-year-old youth allegedly involved in several cases of extortion, robbery and dacoity under Poonthura, Thiruvallom and Fort police station limits. According to the police, Satheesh Kumar alias "Steel Saji", a resident of 48/577, Green Gardens House no. 34, Ambalathara in Manacaud village, was involved in the daylight assault on Binoy, a resident of Kollamthara, near the Thiruvallom bridge and the attack on a bakery near the Milma Dairy at Ambalathara on September 23. Satheesh was arrested by a police team led by the SI (Fort), B. Suresh Kumar. The accused was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate II and remanded to 15 days in judicial custody. The police have arrested the leader of a four-member gang, which specialises in carrying out burglaries in brides' houses during the `muhurtham' time on the wedding day in the city and suburbs. The CI (Peroorkada), M. Radhakrishnan Nair, identified the accused as Jayaprakash alias "Vala Suresh", 27, a resident of Attirakathu veedu, Manikentaswaram, near Peroorkada. With the arrest of Jayaprakash, the police have solved the robbery that took place during the wedding day in several houses at Peroorkada, Vattiyoorkavu, Nedumangad, Karakulam, Vazhayila and Manikenteswaram. According to the police, the gang would collect details about the marriage in the localities from taxi stand and locals. The gang members would befriend the relatives of the bride and would participate in the reception. The gang leader would arrive in an autorickshaw and rob the house during the muhurtham time on the wedding day. The gang members would regroup after one or two weeks for another robbery. The accused was produced before the court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. According to the police, efforts are on to arrest three other members of the gang.
