Congress, TRS to slug it out for Mondabypoll

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 16. An interesting electoral battle is on the cards for the Hissamgunj Monda (division no.87) bypoll of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad with the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi fielding candidates.

The byelection was necessitated following resignation of T. Padma Rao of the TRS as corporator upon his election as MLA from the Secunderabad Assembly constituency.

Mr. Padma Rao had contested twice and won in 1986 on Congress ticket and in 2002 on TRS platform.

Election tomorrow

Four candidates are in fray for the byelection on November 18. The Bharatiya Janata Party's long-standing city unit leader, Bhawarlal Varma, is contesting - he had lost to Mr. Padma Rao before. B. Muthyalu is contesting on Congress ticket and K. Mohan on TRS ticket.

The lone Independent in fray is M.R. Giridhar.

The division was the home for wholesale market of vegetables, grains, jewellery and the likes for decades.

But, despite heavy business transactions, civic conditions are pathetic. Main contenders have promised to spruce up the area, beset with congested roads, stinking and overflowing sewerage, lack of adequate public toilets, haphazard and illegal buildings' construction, etc.

While Mr. Varma claims of much work being done during the former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya's reign, Mr. Mohan talks about the performance of his `guru,' Mr. Padma Rao. On the other hand, Mr. Muthyulu seeks to point out that the division has prospered during former Minister, M. Sashidhar Reddy's tenure as MLA. If a ruling party candidate gets elected, the division can expect more development, he contends.

Congress charge

Seventeen polling stations have been set up. There are 15,991 voters in the division.

Meanwhile, the Congress camp led by Mr. Sashidhar Reddy and Anjan Kumar Yadav, MLA, has appealed to the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure strict vigilance for preventing rigging.

In a memorandum submitted to the SEC, they alleged that the BJP and TRS candidates were `targeting' specific booths for the purpose.
