HYDERABAD, NOV.16. A dawn-to-dusk fast (Upavasa Deeksha) was observed and peaceful rallies taken out in residential areas near some temples in the city on Tuesday in protest against the arrest of the Kanchi seer, Sri Jayendra Saraswati. The protests were spearheaded by Sri Subramanyeswara and Hanuman temples, which house the State office of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. Since morning at Skandagiri, devotees gathered under a tent with ladies chanting "Lalitha Sahasranamam". The gathering dispersed at 4.45 p.m. "Rahu Kaalam" set in. A rally was taken out in Padmarao Nagar around the Skandagiri temple complex. The call given by Sri Vidyan Nrusimha Bharati, Head of the Pushpagiri Peetham, to suspend the customary offering (naivedhyam) to the presiding deities, appeared to have been largely ignored. The idol of Lord Hanuman Temple was bedecked and covered with `tulasi' leaves and `vadamalai'.
Arjitha Seva suspended
The priest at the Hanuman Temple said they did not give "theertha prasadam" to devotees and there was no "Arjitha Seva" on Sunday and Monday but the offering to God was not stopped. Yet another temple official said the protest call could not be followed because an "Athi Rudra Yaaga" was started much before the Seer's arrest. Sri Vidyan Nrusimha Bharati, the Pushpagiri Seer, said he had spoken to devotees in Tamil Nadu to find out what kind of protests were being staged. He said: "People in Andhra Pradesh appeared to be taking the Kanchi seer's arrest more seriously and were pained more than their brethren in Tamil Nadu". The temple attached to the Pushpagiri Peetham in Begumpet here, followed the call and there was no `neivedhyam' to the presiding deity from dawn to dusk. Meanwhile, a host of seers from different `peethams' are all set to meet at Keshav Nilayam, the RSS headquarters, on Wednesday before participating in a public meeting at Keshav Memorial High School grounds.
