Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, NOV. 16. The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority's outer ring road (ORR) project is on the take-off stage. The Chief Minister has already directed the authorities to complete the land acquisition process for all the four phases of the project at one go before commencing construction work.
Launch of work
"The HUDA has acquired the land for the 22-km stretch of ORR and the Chief Minister has asked us to complete the remaining land acquisition work within three months. Even if the acquisition process takes a month more, we are confident of launching the work by April or May 2005," the HUDA Chairman, D. Sudheer Reddy, said on Tuesday. Survey for identifying about 8,000 acres of land for acquisition was on. While the total project required 9,785 acres, 1,600 acres was Government land, he noted. The HUDA sought 120 surveyors from the Land Acquisition Department to speed up the identification process.
Foreign funding too
The project aimed at decongesting the city would get 50 per cent of funds from the Centre. "We are contemplating procuring rest of funds from foreign financial agencies. The agency financing the Polavaram project is keen to finance the ORR project at a nominal interest. Negotiations are on," Mr. Sudheer Reddy said. The ring road would be from Gachibowli to Shamshabad, Hayatnagar, Shamirpet, Patancheru and end at Gachibowli. There would be a slight change in the alignment from Gachibowli to Shamshabad to ease the process of land acquisition and to bring down the project cost, it is said. Once ORR is in place, most of inter-city traffic via National Highways 7 and 9 and Warangal highway, comprising trucks and heavy vehicles, would bypass the city. Though ORR was proposed to be a 250-ft road, it might be reduced to 150 ft in stretches where it was not feasible, the Chairman said. The HUDA was keen on developing two model townships out of the proposed 22 townships near Jawaharnagar and another one on Vijayawada highway. "We are hoping to develop all the townships structured around ORR in next five years," Mr. Reddy added.
