Arrested for extortion bid

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 16. A 40-year-old man has been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly trying to extort money from a doctor in the name of gangster Abu Salem. It later turned out that the accused had targeted the doctor in his locality to overcome financial difficulties.

According to the police, the doctor who runs a clinic at Dilshad Garden had been receiving threatening calls on his mobile phone for some time. The caller, posing as a member of the Abu Salem gang, demanded Rs. 1 lakh for the safety of his family.

The doctor reported the matter to the Dilshad Garden police and a case was registered. The police directed the doctor to fix a meeting point with the caller. Accordingly, a trap was laid near a hospital in Dilshad Garden on Monday evening.

Around 8-45 p.m., a man came to collect the amount from the doctor near the hospital and the waiting police team arrested him. The accused was identified as Suresh Kumar, a resident of GTB Enclave in Dilshad Garden. The mobile phone used for making the calls was seized from him.

During interrogation, Suresh told the police that he had been facing a financial crunch and hatched the conspiracy to extort money from the doctor. He also revealed that he had earlier tried to extort money from another doctor but had failed.
