Shikha's day out

BANGALORE, NOV. 17. Shikha Tandon smashed two meet records and won all three races in the women's section on the second day of the all-India inter-university aquatic championships at the BAC pool here on Wednesday.

Shikha cracked the 19-year-old mark of Anita Sood (5:37.58) by clocking 5:29.46 in the 400m individual medley. "The record was hardly on my mind. I haven't swum in the 400 IM in the past couple of years," she said.

International Ambica Iyengar also bettered the meet mark with 5:33.62. The Bangalore girls staged an encore in the 100m freestyle with Shika clocking a new meet time of 1:02.23. Ambica also bettered the existing mark (1:04.63) with a time of 1:02.78.

Shikha also won the 200m backstroke gold and completed the day on a winning note as part of the Bangalore University relay quartet, which set a new 400m medley relay mark of 5:03.72.

In the men's section, Rahul Bata of Viswesvaraya University of Technology improved his own record in the 100m freestyle, clocking 55.0 (old: 55.87). Srinand Srinivas won two more gold medals, winning the 400m IM with a new meet record of 4:59.13 and 100m backstroke, which saw a thrilling finish with Srinand pipping favourite V. Arun of Madras University to the post.
