VIJAYAWADA, NOV.17. The recent issuance of GO No 107 fixing the minimum draw down level (MDDL) of Srisailam Reservoir at 854 feet created a ruckus at the Zilla Parishad meeting with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members disrupting the proceedings by staging a dharna inside the hall. The Higher Education Minister, P.Venkateswara Rao, who was present at the meeting, walked out of the hall in a huff after the TDP members commenced their dharna. The dharna was preceded by a two-hour heated exchanges between TDP and Congress members. Though initially the chairperson, N.Sudha Rani, adjourned the meeting for lunch break, the TDP members continued their protest after the break forcing the adjournment of the meeting for the entire day.
Resolution sought
Trouble started right at the commencement of the meeting with the Nandigama legislator, D.Uma Maheswara Rao, and the TDP floor leader, Y.B. Rajendra Prasad, repeatedly raising the issue of the GO 107 and seeking its immediate withdrawal. The TDP leaders wanted the meeting to pass a unanimous resolution asking the Government to scrap the GO. However, the Congress leaders like the Tenali MP, V.Balashowry, the Gudur ZPTC member, A. Kanta Rao, and others defended the GO stating that sufficient water had been released for the Krishna delta farmers and there was no need to rake up the issue at the meeting. However, the TDP members stuck to their stance stating that farmers in the region were highly agitated. While the TDP members accused the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, of compromising the interests of the delta farmers to benefit the farmers of his native Rayalseema region, the Congress leaders asserted that only after the party assumed power, sufficient water had been released for the standing crops in the region. The Education Minister's clarification that the GO was issued only after a thorough discussion at an all-party meeting failed to convince the TDP members. Mr. Rao pointed out that the senior TDP leader, M.V. Mysoora Reddy, while being in the Congress had sought increase in the MDDL to 854 feet, but was now opposing the same after changing the party. Asserting that sufficient water was being released for the delta farmers, the Minister appealed to the TDP leaders not to politicise the issue. A number of Congress members rose to oppose the TDP persisting with the issue. Stating that the issue had been sufficiently clarified by the Government, they wanted the meeting to take up other issues in the agenda. However, the TDP refused to relent and marched to the podium to commence their dharna forcing the adjournment of the meeting for the entire day. The legislators -- M. Venkata Pratap Appa Rao (Nuzivid), Y. Raja Ramachander Rao (Kaikaluru), M.Venkateswara Rao (Gannavaram), and Kodali Venkateswara Rao alias Nani (Gudivada) -- and the district Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy, attended the meeting.
