Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Centre's decision to reduce troops in Jammu and Kashmir is a bold one. The move goes beyond political rhetoric and empathises with the common man in the Valley. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's offer of peace with honour is a huge step towards addressing the alienation of the common Kashmiri.
Huma Hasan,
* * * Sir, The move is laudable. Dr. Singh has shown a commitment to translate his ideas into action.
K. Asha,
* * * Sir, Dr. Singh has spoken of the need for Kashmiris to feel free from the fear of war in our plural, secular and democratic framework. But there is no place for the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in a democracy. If Dr. Singh is committed to his offer, the Centre should withdraw the AFSPA.
Shankar Gopalakrishnan,
* * * Sir, This refers to the report that Dr. Singh has virtually rejected the Musharraf plan on Kashmir. He has said in categorical terms that Kashmir remains an integral part of India. We have a strong-willed Prime Minister who puts the country first.
P.J. Joseph,
