Letters to the Editor
Sir, The report that Zahira Sheikh, key witness in the Best Bakery case, did not depose on Wednesday in Mumbai is disappointing. If a witness can be coerced into turning hostile, it demonstrates a glaring deficiency in our legal system. It is quite obvious that Ms. Sheikh changed her mind because of some pressure. A witness protection programme involving relocation and resettlement under a new identity is the need of the hour.
Vasundhara Sirnate,
* * * Sir, Ms. Sheikh probably fell for the misinformation on the motives of the NGOs fighting her cause. The disconnect between the riot victims and well-intentioned relief workers puts the onus on the latter to delve more deeply into the real needs of their constituency, which may not match their own prescription of justice.
Ghulam Muhammed,
