MANGALORE, NOV. 18. The former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, M. Rama Jois, on Thursday expressed concern over cow slaughter in the country. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day national seminar on "Economics and commerce: Ancient concept and modern relevance'' he said that cow slaughter had been banned in the country through a law. Referring to Kautilya's "Artha Shasthra," he said that Kautilya had mentioned about the importance of agriculture. Cows were part of agriculture and life of people. The importance of cows and the role played by them were being neglected. Though cow slaughter had been legally banned, it continued in the country, he said. Mr. Jois said that liquor should be totally banned in the country. He said that unless prohibition was implemented in the country, it was not possible to improve the lot of Dalits and others. He said that many Constitutional laws had been neglected for "electoral advantage." Many such laws were not being implemented properly.
