DAVANGERE, NOV. 18. Kaushik Mukherjee, Secretary to the Government, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, who is in charge of the district, has called upon all civic bodies to step up property tax and water tax collection to mobilise resources for providing basic amenities. He was reviewing the progress of relief work here on Thursday. Mr. Mukherjee told the officials to give priority to drinking water supply schemes. He asked the officials of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. (BESCOM) to ensure that drinking water schemes were given power connections on priority. The officials were told to prepare a "running cost sheet" for every water supply scheme. The officials of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies were told to withdraw ration cards given to ineligible persons. Mr. Mukherjee said many families had secured more than one ration card under different names. He asked the officials to trace such cards and withdraw them. About the procurement of maize, he said that the Government owed Rs. 5 crores to farmers. He said the authorities concerned had been instructed to release the money to farmers immediately. Bettsurmutt, Assistant Commissioner, pointed out that Rs. 4 crores was due to those who had ceded land for the Bhadra project. Mr. Mukherjee said he would impress upon the Government to release the amount. M.S. Ravishankar, Deputy Commissioner; Narayanaswamy, Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat; and Nanjundeshwar, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, were present.
