BHOPAL, NOV. 18. The Madhya Pradesh Government has asked the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to investigate "irregular payments" totalling Rs. 7.15 crores in rehabilitation and resettlement works linked with the Sardar Sarovar Project. The audit for the period between March 2003 and July 2004 conducted by the Accountant-General reveals that the Badwani office of the Executive Engineer of Narmada Development Division-22 made "irregular payments running" into crores without drawing and disbursing powers. The tactics adopted by the sub-divisional office allegedly were to make payments in parts upto a limit of Rs. 5000 by fudging records to show that payments had been made for many separate works entrusted to a few selected contractors without following the mandatory procedure of inviting tenders. When contacted, an EOW source said the State Government had decided to conduct a thorough investigation since a huge amount had allegedly been siphoned off from the relief and rehabilitation works of the Sardar Sarovar Project.
