Teachers to oppose move on Doon university

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN, NOV. 18. The Uttaranchal Universities and College Teachers' Association has decided to oppose the State Government's move to establish Doon University on the lines of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

Expressing anguish, the teachers said they and the students had been demanding a university in Doon to cater to the needs of over 50,000 students in different colleges of Dehra Dun and Hardwar districts. This varsity could have relieved these students of the expensive and tedious visits to the Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna University office in Srinagar (Garhwal). Also, since this region is known for extremely good school education a local varsity could have made the area good in varsity education also.

The teachers wondered what the bureaucrats meant by keeping the existing colleges affiliated to the Garhwal University when it had proved to be a rather inefficient centre of learning with cases of corruption being reported every year.

"We agree that Doon University must be developed as a centre of excellence with facilities for studying special subjects but the Government should make it an affiliating varsity for the benefit of the local masses," said V.P. Singh, convenor of the movement.

The teachers wondered how the Government was thinking of establishing a JNU type varsity when it had no land or money for the purpose.
