ALAPPUZHA, NOV. 18. The State Government would recruit 100 sportspersons who have excelled in various fields to Government departments, before December 31, the Minister for Sports and Fisheries, Dominic Presentation, has said. Speaking at a meet-the-press organised by the Alappuzha Press Club today, Mr. Presentation said the list of sportspersons who would be recruited had been almost finalised. If the name of the rowing champion Shobhini, who committed suicide recently, was in the list, the Government would consider providing a job to one of her family members, the Minister said. The Minister said as per existing rules, the Government could recruit 20 sportspersons to various departments, each year. But no sportsperson had been recruited into the Government service between 1997 and 2002, he said. "During the term of the former Sports Council president, Balachandran, not a single sports person was given job in Government service," the Minister said.
VS criticised
The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, who criticised the State Government for the suicide of Ms. Shobhini should realise the facts. The Minister asked him to stop politicising the issue. Mr. Presentation said the LDF Government had not distributed cash awards to sportspersons though they decided to give Rs. 2 lakhs each to the winners in national events. It was the UDF Government under A. K. Antony, which distributed Rs. 2.4 crores to sportspersons. Referring to the crisis in fisheries sector, the Minister said there was a fall in the price of fish during the last few months. He said a meeting of officials and all parties concerned would be held at Ernakulam on November 22 to discuss the issue. The Minister later visited Ms. Shobhini's house. He promised to give her family Rs. 2.07 lakhs due to her.
