Incorrect and misleading report, says Yechury

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member, Sitaram Yechury, writes:

"A news item issued by the PTI from Kolkata (Nov. 18, 2004) has attributed certain remarks to me regarding the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya. These are incorrect and misleading.

"The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) has already made its stand clear on the arrest of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. Taking note of the serious charges made against him, it has stated that nobody is above law and the judicial process should proceed unhindered. The statement made by the Chief Minister in the Tamil Nadu Assembly has made this clear. The party has condemned the efforts of the VHP and some other forces to give a communal angle to this affair.

"Given this stand, there is no question of the CPI(M) expressing displeasure, or, my being unhappy regarding the proceedings connected with the case."
