MADURAI, NOV.18. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, said that the administration was assessing the extent of damage caused by rain to crops in the district. He said a team of Agriculture Department officials had started assessment and a detailed report would be submitted to him soon. There were 292 major and 1,973 minor irrigation tanks in the district and most of them were brimming with water. He had already directed the Public Works Department to identity all weak bunds and undertake restoration work. The administration would take measures and provide cash doles to the affected farmers. Funds would not be a constraint in disbursing doles as the administration had sufficient funds on its own, he said. However, the administration was not expecting any large-scale damage to the crops and any decision on waiver of crop loans, would be taken by the State Government. Mr. Raajendiran said there had been no shortage of paddy seeds as the godowns were adequately stocked with seeds. He had constituted a (cyclone) disaster management committee and convened preliminary meetings on the preparedness of the panel and the official machinery in coping with any emergency that might arise during flash floods.
