College students go on rampage

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 18 . A tense situation prevailed in the Government-aided Dhanavachapuram VTMNSS College on Thursday morning when 50 students went on the rampage destroying college property and threatening teachers.

The police entered the college campus at the instance of the Principal and resorted to caning to disperse the violent students. Thirteen students were rounded up from the campus on the charge of destroying college property. The police said that they would be produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II at Neyyatinkara on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly and destruction of public property.

The Principal had suspended some students for exploding crackers in the college in connection with Diwali festival. A section of the students protested against the action of the Principal.

According to the police, a group of students passed "unsavoury comments" at some women teachers when they came to engage the classes on Thursday morning. This prompted some teachers of the faculty to boycott work till the situation was brought under control.

The police said that a section of the students closed the gates of the college and created a siege-like situation. The police was informed of the situation only two hours later, a senior district police official said.
