Montek reviews Plan progress, CMs seek aid package

LUCKNOW, NOV. 19. Taking stock of the progress of development works in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Chattisgarh in the 10th Plan today, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia reiterated that it would be hard to achieve the targetted national growth rate of 8.1 per cent.

Reviewing the progress made by these States at a mid-term appraisal of the 10 Plan period here, the Commission held detailed discussions with the UP Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Uttaranchal CM Narayan Dutt Tiwari and the Chattisgarh CM, Raman Singh.

During the meeting, the three CMs conveyed the problems in their respective States and demanded a special package for development.

After the meeting, Dr. Ahluwalia told the Press that the national mid-term appraisal report would present the real status of the development works in the three States.

However, he said an impossible task of 11 per cent growth rate in the next two years was required to achieve the target of 8.1 per cent as after 3 years the rate could only touch 6 per cent.

Talking about UP, Dr. Ahluwalia said some progress has been made in power and Agro-processing sector but still there was a huge gap in the field of education, health and agriculture sectors.

The UP Chief Minister told reporters that he had reiterated his demand for a Rs 18,000 crore special economic package for the State. Mr. Yadav said he had again asked for a region-wise economic package to develop Poorvanchal, Madhyanchal and Bundelkhand.

Mr Yadav said he also had an hour-long one-to-one talk with Dr. Ahluwalia.
