Two engineers abducted in Bihar

By K. Balchand

PATNA, NOV. 19. Two senior engineers of the National Hydro Power Corporation, a Union public sector undertaking, were abducted from Vaishali district today.

The general manager, T. Mandal, and the chief engineer, K.K. Singh, were on their way to Bettiah from here when they were abducted.

The incident came to light when the driver of the vehicle, who had been drugged, regained consciousness and reported the matter to the police. Two separate cases have been filed at Motihari and Patna.

The State Government has given the NHPC the contract to execute the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojna.

The NHPC was in the process of inviting tenders for sub-letting the job. The NHPC had received extortion threats as well as warnings about the awarding of the contract.

The abduction comes close on the heels of the kidnapping of a physician and the murder of a surgeon which had led to disruption of the health services in the State till the strike was called off yesterday.

Companies engaged in the construction of the Golden Quadrilateral had also come under pressure from contractors and the mafia.
