Pratibha Rajiv award for 6
HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, presented the `Pratibha Rajiv' award to six eminent personalities at a function held jointly with the launch of Rajiv Yuva Shakti, a self-employment programme for the youth, at Shilpakala Vedika here on Friday. Those honoured were: Kasipatnam Rama Rao (writer), Kosuri Punnaiah (theatre artiste), Chindu Yellamma (Chindu Bhagavatam exponent), P. Dayaratnam (engineering expert), Mohammed Yousuf Khan (Olympian footballer), who was brought in a wheelchair, and T. Amarnatha Reddy (social worker). Each of them was presented a cheque for Rs. 50,000, citation, a memento and a shawl. Dr. Reddy said the function reflected the blend of the youth and the old and hoped that the achievements of the eminent persons would inspire the youth.
CPI backs moves on irrigation
HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India assistant secretary, K. Narayana, has justified the State Government seeking World Bank assistance for irrigation projects. Launching the party's membership drive at the general body meeting of Seri Lingampally area on Friday, he said it was different from earlier requests. Criticising the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products and LPG as a burden on people, he wanted the Centre to withdraw the hike. On the talks with Maoists, he observed that the arms issue should not be an impediment.
National integration oath
HYDERABAD: The Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, administered an oath of national integration to Secretariat staff in connection with the `Quami Ekta Week' on Friday. He read out the pledge to employees and senior officers in the open area in front of the block housing his office on the Secretariat premises. The Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, the Secretary (Services), Satish Chandra, and senior officers were present. A similar oath was administered separately by heads of departments near their respective offices in Secretariat.
World Bank loan for college
TIRUPATI: Cash-strapped Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) will get Rs.16.13-crore loan from the World Bank. The plan has been okayed after a WB team visited the campus and okayed the aid. A national project implementation unit (NPIU) and a State project facilitation unit (SPFU) will be set up as part of the plan to improve educational standards, besides spreading IT awareness among the rural youth.
Overcome by grief, ryot ends life
TIRUPATI: A debt-ridden farmer ended his life in less than 48 hours after his wife committed suicide. Information reaching here said the body of Poli Naidu (43) was found lying in the shrubs near Srikalahasti bus stand on Thursday. The family owning four acres at Palachur in Pellakur mandal was steeped in debts and was finding it difficult to make both ends meet. Naidu was said to have been upset over his wife, Jayalakshmi's suicide on Tuesday and his failure to give her even a decent burial because of his penury. The last rites of Jayalakshmi was said to have been performed by her relatives.
New postings for IAS officers
HYDERABAD: The Government on Friday issued orders to four IAS officers. D. Subba Rao, who was awaiting posting on completion of foreign assignment, was made Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. The order posting A.P. Rao as State Editor, District Gazetteer, had been cancelled, and he was now appointed Additional Secretary, Planning, in the existing vacancy. Premchand was appointed Secretary, Minorities Welfare, relieving Ajoyendra Pyal from the additional charge of the post. Neetu Kumari Prasad, Sub-Collector, Bhadrachalam, was posted Municipal Commissioner, Warangal.
Fugitive life convict nabbed
CUDDAPAH: A life convict, Gangi Reddy, who jumped parole six years ago, was arrested by the Proddatur police in the wee hours of Friday. Gangi Reddy was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1986 for murdering Rajoli Veera Reddy (60) in Proddatur in 1985, the Proddatur I Town CI, Nagaraja Reddy, said. While serving life term in Hyderabad Central Jail, he was granted a month's parole on August 30, 1995, and he got it extended. He was due to surrender on June 1, 1998, but fled since then, the CI added.

KURNOOL: A mentally retarded woman, who was roaming at the Police Control Room without clothes in the city, was admitted in a hospital on the initiative of the former Mayor, Bangi Ananthaiah. When the woman was taken to the psychiatry ward in the General Hospital, doctors refused to admit her on the ground that there should be a formal approval from the police. Mr. Ananthaiah lodged a complaint with the police and arranged an attendant for the patient for a week.

NELLORE: Three students have allegedly committed suicide in Kavali area during the last 10 days, creating a scare in the town. Whatever might be the reasons, the frequency with which the incidents have happened has caused concern among parents. While the police are proceeding with their usual enquiries, there are a number of versions about these incidents.
Award for professor
Tirupati: Kosaraju Chandrasekhara Rao, working as associate dean in ANGRAU's Sri Venkateswara Agricultural College here, has been selected for the `World lifetime achievement award' by the American Biographical Institute for his contribution to the field of agriculture. Prof. Rao has also been selected for `Udyog Gaurav award' and `Bharat Yogyata Award' announced by the Friendship Forum of India, New Delhi, for the year 2004. The same would be presented to him at Chennai on December 17.
Red sanders seized
CUDDAPAH: The forest officials arrested two persons and seized red sander logs costing Rs. 1 lakh kept ready for transportation in Y. Kota forest in Kodur mandal on Friday. The accused, B. Subramanyam and Venkataramana were arrested, but three others were absconding, according to the Forest Ranger, Khader Vali.
Electrocuted
NELLORE: A watchman at an aqua farm at Narikelapalli village of Muttukuru mandal, died, reportedly due to electrocution on Friday.
According to available information, the incident occurred when the deceased came in touch with a live fencing wire. He has been identified as V. Ramanaiah.
Harmony campaign
TIRUPATI: Communal harmony campaign, observed as a week-long programme every year from November 19 to coincide with `Quami Ekta week', began at SVIMS University on Friday. National Foundation for Communal Harmony, an autonomous body under the union Ministry of Home Affairs conducted the event.
Crushing begins in sugar unit
CHITTOOR: The Lift Irrigation Minister, Marappa, along with Chief Whip, Kiran Kumar Reddy, inaugurated the crushing of sugar cane in Chittoor Cooperative Sugar Factory here on Friday. He said the factory was revived by the present Government as per the Congress party's poll promise.

KURNOOL: The president of Nayibrahmin Seva Sangam, V.V. Ramana Murthy, has urged the Government to apply domestic power tariff rates for barbershops on par with the concessions offered to washermen.

KURNOOL: K. Sudhakar Babu, assistant professor of Chemistry at SKU PG Centre, was nominated to the Electro-chemical Society of India, IIT, Bangalore. He will act as coordinator for seminars, workshops and symposia in the related field.
Library inaugurated
KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Endowments, M. Satyanarayana Rao, inaugurated the newly constructed district library buildings at a cost of Rs. 29 lakhs in the town on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed on the importance of libraries in preserving our history and culture. The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, the Zilla Parishad chairman, K.V Rajeshwara Rao, the Karimnagar municipal chairman, V Hanumantha Reddy, and the district grandhalaya samstha chairman, B Rajesham were present.
Science expo
KARIMNAGAR: The Paramita Educational Institutions will organise a two-day science exhibition called Eureka-2004 at the Paramita High School premises in Mankammathota in the town on November 20 and 21. About 200 projects including working models would be on display at the exhibition. Students from nursery to class X will participate.

KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Minorities and Fisheries, Md. Fariduddin inaugurated the State-level rural football tournaments being organised at the Ambedkar stadium on Friday. A total of 22 teams will participate in the tournaments being held at Ambedkar Stadium, Circus Grounds and Police Parade Grounds in the town.

ADILABAD: The 210th birth anniversary of Kranti Guru Lahuji Salve and 133rd birth anniversary of Krantiveer Birsa Munda will be celebrated on November 21 at Gudihatnoor mandal headquarter at 1 p.m. According to a press release here on Friday a multi language `kavi sammelan' would be organised on the occasion. Local poet "Pagal Adilabadi" will participate.
Two die in accident
KARIMNAGAR: Two Government employees were killed and eight others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a lorry from behind in Renikunta village of Thimmapur mandal on Friday. According to the police sources, the revenue officials of Ramagundam mandal were returning from Hyderabad when the mishap took place. The Jangaon village secretary, M Papi Reddy (55), and the Ramagundam village secretary, S Srinivas (32) were killed on the spot.
The revenue inspectors, D. S. Venkanna, N. Hanumanthu, ASO, Md. Khaseem, surveyor, K. Vijayashankar, typist, T. Vasundara Rao, village servants, D. Tirupathi, K. Ravinder and S. Srinivas are undergoing treatment in a private hospital.
Youth killed in mishap
Sangareddy: Elias (22), a resident of Ghanbirpur, Karimnagar, died on the spot when the van he was driving hit a Hyderabad bound-truck on Friday. The accident occurred near Medinipur of Kondapak mandal, Medak district, on the Hyderabad-Karimnagar State highway. The truck driver, Srinivas and two others in the van received severe injuries and were admitted to Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.

WARANGAL: Members of the Affiliated College Teachers' Association (ACTA) staged a dharna near office of the Regiona Joint Director (Higher Education) here today. They demanded that the Government pay salaries in time, extend Career Advancement Scheme, regularise contract lecturers and pay of UGC arrears.

WARANGAL: The students of Masterji Degree College donated blood as a part of the NCC Day celebrations. The camp organised in association with the Red Cross and Lions club of Bheemaram was inaugurated by Joint Collector, Syed Omer Jaleel. Cadets of 4 (A) Air Sqn from LB College, Vagdevi College, Chaitanya and Kakatiya Degree College took part in the camp.
