NAGAPATTINAM, NOV. 19. Water supply to the Cauvery river system from the Grand Anicut was reduced this evening to 1,168 cusecs from 2,013 cusecs discharged last evening. However, supply in the Grand Anicut Canal was stepped up to 1,500 from 501 cusecs yesterday. The Vennar was getting 467 cusecs, down from 516 cusecs yesterday.
Mettur inflow falls
Water supply from the Mettur reservoir remained suspended for the Cauvery delta irrigation, as there was no demand, according to irrigation officials. The inflow fell to 6,908 cusecs from 7,309 cusecs yesterday. The level in the dam stood at 102.54 feet (full level 120 feet) and the storage was 68.17 tmcft (full capacity 93.4 tmc feet). Discharge was maintained at 100 cusecs. No rainfall was recorded in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts in the last three days. The bright sunshine in this district enabled farmers to salvage submerged paddy crops. However, water is yet to recede from fields in the coastal areas of Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam and Thalainayar taluks. The Nagapattinam Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, instructed irrigation officials to quickly drain water from fields through regulators. He said adequate quantity of urea was available in the district and warned of stern action against shops selling the urea and other fertilizers at high prices.
Central road fund
More than 50-km stretch of roads in the district will be improved by the Highways department at a cost of Rs. 8.66 crores with financial assistance from the Central Road Fund, said Mr. Moni, today. Out of the total amount, Rs.1.90 crores had been allocated for improving the Viomedu-Vedaranyam-Kodiakarai road (7.68 km), Rs. 1.20 crores for Sakkanam-Kolappadu road (6 km), Rs. 1.49 crores for Tirumarugal-Sannanallur road (8 km), Rs. 1 crore for Mappadugai-Thiru Indalur-Mayiladuturai road (5 km), Rs. 1.37 crores for Mayiladuturai-Sirkazhi road (8 km) and Rs. 1.70 crores for Thirunellikaval-Kolappadu-Karunganni road, the Collector said.
