PUDUKOTTAI, NOV.19 . Babul seedlings would be raised on about 225 hectares in the district at an outlay of Rs. 20.05 lakhs during the current year 2004-05 under the community forest development programme. As on October 31, the coverage was 151 hectares while the expenditure was Rs. 9.84 lakhs, says a press release issued here. An extent of 1,000 hectares was fixed as a target to plant babul seedlings under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana at an outlay of Rs. 110 lakhs. The coverage was 700 hectares and the expenditure was Rs. 90.51 lakhs as on October 31. Under the clean village campaign, 89,000 taller seedlings would be raised at a cost of Rs. 17.62 lakhs, and they would be distributed to panchayats to increase tree cover in Pudukottai. During the current financial year, casuarina seedlings would be planted on 50 hectares under the shelterbelt scheme at an outlay of Rs. 14.5 lakhs. Works regarding raising nurseries and other preparatory works were progressing and planting would be completed shortly. The release said Comprehensive Wasteland Programme was being implemented in Ponnamaravathy block from 2002-03. Development activities to the extent of 1,773 hectares were taken up and eight watershed areas were selected. The activities were completed on 1,573 hectares at a cost of Rs. 61.20 lakhs. Under the same programme, eight watershed areas were selected in the Viralimalai panchayat union where development activities to the extent of 700 hectares were taken up at an outlay of Rs. 29.40 lakhs. The release said farm development works through the Agricultural Engineering Department were taken up on 33.50 hectares as against the target of 86.42 hectares. An allotment of Rs.121.20 lakhs was received under the Centrally sponsored scheme and the State plan for drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation on 1,355.67 hectares.
