Tardy progress irks panchayat chief

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 19. The review meeting here on Wednesday took note of the tardy progress achieved in small savings scheme in the district.

According to an official release here, Somnath, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat President, expressed displeasure at the progress of development schemes.

While the Engineering Division of the Commercial Taxes Department had achieved 20 per cent of its target, the achievement of Engineering Division of the zilla panchayat was 10.2 per cent. The achievement of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) was 22 per cent and that of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) just 3 per cent. The departments of agriculture and watershed development were yet to take off in meeting targets for want of grants.

Subodh Yadav, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, questioned the Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Welfare, Gertrude Veigas, on the tardy progress in the implementation of development schemes for women. The meeting reviewed the implementation of the development schemes in October.

Mr. Yadav directed the officials concerned to clearly demarcate the housing site boundaries on land while distributing title deeds to beneficiaries under various housing schemes. He said this was to avoid any complications among the beneficiaries later on.

S. Abbas, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industries, urged Mr. Somanath to direct the officials concerned to repair a mechanised ferry, which was in service previously and was used by people to cross the Netravathi. He said the department had allowed private country boats to ferry people and had not shown any interest in repairing the mechanised ferry.
