More impressive programme for foreign tourists

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, NOV.19. To make village visit programme, organised for foreign tourists during the Pongal festival, more impressive and to attract more foreign visitors the State Tourism Department has decided to include visits to some tourist spots in and around the city in the agenda.

According to official sources, this move is part of various measures being taken by the department to promote tourism.

However, the list of tourist spots is yet to be finalised.

A 20-day dance festival, which was scheduled to begin from the first week of December, has been rescheduled for January 16.

The reschedule was mooted by some members at a recent District Tourism Council meeting held under the chairmanship of the Collector, D. Raajendiran, and the council also approved it, sources said.

Since the festival is being organised at the Tirukkalyana Mandapam of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, only classical dance forms will be performed.

All programmes will be held for nearly two hours everyday in the evening.

The dance festival, which is organised every year during the Chitirai festival, could not be held in view of the Lok Sabha election this year.

Hence, the department planned to have it in December during the peak tourist season.

Later, it was felt that it would be more ideal to hold it during the Pongal celebrations here.

Folk festival

The department has planned to organise a five-day folk festival at the Tirumalai Nayak Mahal.

During the programme, a minimum of seven dance performances would be organised in coordination with the Department of Art and Culture.

Besides, an exhibition on handicraft products would also be organised at the Mahal as part of the Pongal celebrations. Products made by Poompuhar, Khadi and Village Industries Commission units and a few NGOs would be displayed at the expo, sources said.
