Tenders issue: MP faults officials, seeks probe

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV.19. The Congress MP from Vijayawada, L. Rajagopal, on Friday demanded a judicial inquiry into the `fiasco' created by the irrigation authorities in the entire process of pre-qualifying contractors for irrigation projects.

Squarely blaming officials for the legal hurdles caused in the execution of the projects, the MP shot off a letter to the Chief Minister saying that `stringent action' be taken against the irrigation authorities concerned. "In the meantime, we need to relieve the authorities in the irrigation department responsible for this fiasco," he said.

Mr. Rajagopal stated that action against the authorities would not only depict the Government's seriousness about implementing policies, but also avoid recurrence of such lapses. He suggested to the Government to adopt the system of international competitive bidding for short-listing the contractors to facilitate multilateral funding.

The MP alleged that the irrigation officials had not followed prudent norms in pre-qualifying the bidders in dealing with 51major packages in 26 irrigation projects due to which the High Court had asked the Government to go in for a fresh notification.

"We would have avoided this setback had the senior officials followed transparency and equality to all while finalising the pre-qualification list."

This has given a handle to the Opposition to create doubts about the Government's intention.

YSR's reaction

Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said he had not received the MP's letter. When his attention was drawn to Mr. Rajagopal's demand, he said: "what he does know about the functioning of the department.

He could have contacted me for the details. His letter shows his ignorance."
