A heartening gesture

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 19. The family of a 27-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead, enabled five persons to open a new chapter in their lives by donating her organs to them.

Vanama Madhavi, wife of V. Suresh, a businessman of Kothagudem, was operated upon for a brain tumour at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) 10 days ago. When she was declared brain dead four days ago, her husband, in-laws, parents and her two children volunteered to donate her organs -- liver, two kidneys and two eyes -- to needy persons.

The surgeons harvested the organs at the hospital. The Global Hospitals received the liver, the CARE Hospital and the Kamineni Hospital the kidneys and the LV Prasad Eye Institute the eyes.

The Mohan Foundation counsellors -- Ganga Viswanathan and Nalini Gopal -- said it was a rare gesture from a middle class family.
