Politics must aid social change: B.L. Shankar

By Our Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR, NOV. 20. B.L. Shankar, former Chairman of the Legislative Council, has stressed the need for politics to become a process of continuous social change. He was speaking after inaugurating a mass marriage programme organised by the Dasa Sahitya Project, the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam trust, the Tirupati Srinidhi Bhajan Mandali, the Srivari Bhajana Mandali, and the Srivatsa Bhajana Mandali in connection with the Sri Srinivasa Kalyanotsava in Tarikere on Saturday.

He regretted the fact that politics was being used as a means to gain power and take advantage of language, caste, and religion. Mr. Shankar said that India had become a model to several countries despite facing many constraints.

Sri Sivananda Shivacharya Swamy of the Shrishyla Shaka Hiremata conducted the wedding rituals for 82 couples. T.H. Shivashankarappa, MLA, presided over the function. D.M. Putte Gowda, MLC; K. Mohammed, the president of the zilla panchayat; K.B. Mallikarjuna, former MLA; and Jayamma Murthy, president of the taluk panchayat; spoke.

The deities brought from Tirupati were taken in a procession through the main streets of the town in the evening.
