Slum dwellers seek better facilities

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, NOV. 20. The Federation of Slum Dwellers' Associations today urged the Government to extend basic amenities and free education to help slum dwellers ameliorate their living condition.

The federation, which held its State-level conclave here today, pointed out that slums were proliferating at a high rate owing to urbanisation.

There were over 4,000 slums in the State. Of them, over 1,000 slums were in Bangalore while there were 82 slums in Mysore. Slum dwellers constituted nearly 30 per cent of the urban population in the State, it said. Hence, it was imperative for the Government to pay attention to redress their grievances of slum dwellers.

The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, who inaugurated the meeting, assured the federation that the Government would look into their demands.

The federation drew the attention of the Government to the fact that though many settlements had come up in the past 10 years, the authorities had not declared them as slums. As a result of this, no amenities were forthcoming from the Slum Development Board, it said.

It urged Mr. Siddaramaiah to declare settlements that had come up since 2000 as slums so that the residents could derive benefits.

Resolution

The federation passed a resolution urging the Government to provide basic amenities to all slums in the State and take measures to rehabilitate slum dwellers, distribute yellow ration cards to them, establish primary schools, anganwadis and libraries in slums, apart from constructing toilets.

The federation also urged the Government to regularise the service of pourakarmikas in corporations and town municipal councils and end the practice of contract labour.

Earlier, more than 2,000 slum dwellers took out a procession through the main thoroughfares of the city. Narayan and Ananthu, former Mayors, were present.
