VISAKHAPATNAM, NOV. 20. The Rotary International, which is celebrating its centenary this year, plans to work for eradication of polio, its district (3020) governor, L. Satyanarain, said here on Saturday. Talking to reporters, he claimed that according to latest reports, there were only 85 reported cases in the country. "We want to have a polio-free world, our way to celebrate the Rotary centenary,'' he stated. Stating that future wars would be fought for water, he said at the global level, the Rotary International was creating awareness on water management. Another major thrust area was literacy. People from various fields of education from all over the country would assemble at Chennai next month and discuss ways and means to achieve total literacy. As for health services, Mr. Satyanarain noted that after January next, the Rotary plans to conduct nearly 8,000 IOL surgeries in the Rotary district which covers the six revenue districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari and Krishna where 85 clubs are functioning.
The Rotary governor said that highway trauma centres were being set up and there were already two at Tuni and near Ibrahimpatnam. Four more centres would be started by June next.
