Demonstration at Kancheepuram

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, NOV. 20. A human chain demonstration was held here today demanding the immediate release of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswathi.

The demonstrators — followers of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt and activists of Hindu organisations and the Bharatiya Janata Party — raised slogans condemning the Acharya's arrest and urged the State Government to desist from "foisting" cases against him.

The human chain, formed at the entrance of the Mutt on Salai, extended on both sides of the Mutt to Salai Street and West Rajaveedhi.

The demonstration started at 4.20 p.m. and ended about an hour later.

The playground inside the District Collectorate campus wore a deserted look this morning.

Police prevented walkers and students from entering the campus in view of the detention of the Acharya at the All-Women Police Station for interrogation.
