VARANASI, NOV. 20. Suspected naxalites today outnumbered a police party, killing 17 constables and wounding several in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh. The 150-strong naxalite group, numbering about 150, ambushed a truck carrying an unspecified number of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) jawans on combing duty this morning. It also blew up the `narkati' culvert, police said. The dead included 13 PAC jawans and four constables, police said, adding that the injured had been rushed to a hospital here. The naxalites lay in wait for the PAC truck, scheduled to pass over the culvert, sources said, adding that they later escaped with their weapons. The Commissioner, C. N. Dubey, IG range, Devraj Nagar and other senior officials reached the spot. An extensive combing operation has been launched in the Naugarh forests, police said. So far no naxalite outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack, he said. The naxalites had yesterday exploded a part of a forest ranger house in Chandauli, killing two forest guards and injuring two others.
