CHENNAI, NOV. 20. A plea to teach Carnatic music at least once a week in all schools was made by Cho S. Ramaswamy, Editor, Thuglak, here today. Mr. Ramaswamy said the need of the hour was to preserve Carnatic music and it would be useful if one concert was conducted in the schools to help propagate the traditional music. "We need a sustained effort to preserve and promote Carnatic music." He was presenting the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Memorial award to vocalist Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan. The function was organised by the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Trust. Mr. Ramaswamy conferred the title "Bhava Laya Sangeetha Bhoopathi" on Mr. Seshagopalan and presented to him a cash award of Rs.10,000 and a memento. Mr. Ramaswamy also honoured with a cash prize of Rs.2,000 each, a shawl and a memento Vidwans T.A. Ganesa Pillai (Thavil), Parthasarathy (Violin), Krishnamurthy (Mridangam), N. Sasikiran (Vocal), P. Ganesh (Chitraveena and Vocal) and Nagai Sriram (Violin). Narayana Viswanath, Syndicate and Senate member, Annamalai University, who inaugurated a music festival, appealed to the corporates to support Carnatic music festivals. A. Natarajan, former Director, Madras Doordarshan Kendra and Vidwan Allepey Sri Venkatesan offered their feliciations to Mr. Seshagopalan. Va. Ve. Su, principal, R.K.M. Vivekananda College, released a book written by Prof. Chandrika Rajaram on "Sangeetha Kalanidhi Maharajapuram Santhanam." Mr. Seshagopalan gave a vocal recital.
