Six TDP men hurt in clash

with Congress workers

ELURU: Six activists of the Telugu Desam Party, including the Eluru Market Yard Chairperson, Nekkalapudi Ramachandra Rao, and the vice-sarpanch of the Jallagokavaram village panchayat, sustained injuries in an alleged attack by Congress workers at an official programme at the village in Pedavegi mandal of West Godavari district on Saturday.

The injured persons were admitted to the Government hospital here. Garapati Sambhasiva Rao, former MLA of the TDP from Denduluru, under which segment the village fell, visited hospital and condemned the alleged excess by Congress workers. According to information, a group clash ensued between TDP and Congress workers over inauguration of the panchayat office.

The SP, K. Narasimha Murthy, told The Hindu that cases would be registered against both the parties.

Maoists raid wine shop

ANANTAPUR: Naxalites of CPI (Maoist) ransacked a wine shop at Nagasamudram Gate on the NH-7 on Friday night. Liquor worth Rs. 25,000 was thrown out.

According to the police, a few armed naxalites first forced closure of other shops at the N.S. Gate at 9 p.m. and then entered the wine shop belonging to one Eediga Narayanappa of Chennekothapalli. The persons in the wine shop were threatened by the Maoists who later broke the liquor bottles. They were learnt to have resorted to the action as the wine shop owner had neglected their warnings against running belt shops in several villages of Ramagiri mandal.

106 acres for IT park

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Housing Board will allot 106 acres at Pocharam, adjacent to the Singapore Township, to K. Raheja Corporation Pvt Ltd, for setting up an IT Park.

A press release issued by the board said on Saturday that the park, which was expected to give impetus to the development of not only Singapore City but also the Hyderabad-Warangal highway, would create 25,000 jobs. The APHB had earlier sent a proposal to the Government to set up the park within the Singapore City, which was approved.

Panchayat workers plan dharna

HYDERABAD: A meeting of employees and workers of gram panchayats here has resolved to demand a new GO, in place of the two being enforced for the panchayat. It criticised the Government for implementing the orders, which did not apply to the entire staff.

A press release issued by the Andhra Pradesh Gram Panchayat Employees and Workers' Union here on Saturday said the meeting decided to organise dharnas on December 6 at district panchayat offices and take out a "Chalo Hyderabad" rally on December 15. The rally would culminate in a public meeting at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, Bagh Lingampally.

Land for weaker sections

HYDERABAD: The State Government will purchase land for Rs. 200 crores and assign it to the weaker sections in the next two years, the Revenue Minister, D. Prasada Rao, announced here on Saturday.

Addressing a seminar on "Professionalism, self-reliance and leadership in cooperatives" organised to mark the centenary of cooperative movement, he said the Government also proposed to distribute land under the Land Ceiling Act in five years.

He outlined the steps being taken for the welfare of farmers, including distribution of one lakh acres on January 26 next year to people belonging to weaker sections.

H. S. K. Tangirala, in-charge principal, Institute of Cooperative Management, which conducted the seminar and S.L.N.T.Srinivas, programme coordinator, spoke.

NRIs' global meet begins

HYDERABAD: The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, on Saturday reiterated that the State Government was leaving no stone unturned to attract non-resident Indians and investors to the State. He was addressing a modest gathering after inaugurating the "NRI Global Meet 2004" at the Shilpa Kala Vedika. He said agriculture and industry, both of which were ignored by the previous Telugu Desam Government, were the thrust areas for the Government now.

Mr. Rosaiah said contrary to the belief that the Congress was against the development of IT sector, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was interested in its growth and was working to make the State the hub of IT activity.

He said the State Government was open to suggestions and urged those interested to come forward with suggestions and proposals.

"We will sort out your problems". The Minister gave away awards of excellence to NRIs, K. Bassi Reddy of Digiquest and to Md. Yousuf Syed, a doctor.

Arrangements for Vaikunta Ekadasi reviewed

TIRUMALA: Elaborate arrangements are being made to meet the pilgrim rush on Vaikunta Ekadasi festival day, falling on December 22 and the New Year's Day.

At a high level review meeting today, the TTD Chief Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam, directed officials of various departments to gear themselves up to met the requirements of visitors on both the days.

The TTD vigilance and security department officials were directed to keep both the ghat roads open round-the-clock from December 22 to January 2 and deploy additional security forces at the Alipiri checking point, Tirumala footpath and the Sri Vari Mettu foot path.

The APSRTC officials were requested to run additional buses to Srinivasa Mangapuram and other local temples on the Ekadasi day and New Year's Day. The garden and electrical departments were entrusted with the job of illuminating the temple and the town and all other TTD-run local temples.

The traffic police were requested to identify more parking slots at Tirumala and Tirupati for the convenience of devotees.

Health official assumes charge

NELLORE: K.S. Badruddin, who was earlier Civil Surgeon, Kuppam, Chittoor district, took over as the District Medical and Health Officer, (D.M.&H.O.) Nellore, on Saturday. The post has been vacant for the last fortnight, following the transfer of the earlier incumbent.

Lions club gesture

ANANTAPUR: Sri Satya Sai Lions Club, Anantapur, distributed steel plates and glasses to about 130 students of Chandrashekhar Azad Municipal School at Khajanagar here on Saturday. The plates and glasses would be useful to the students of poor families for mid-day meal scheme.

In ACB net

NELLORE: Officials of the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB), Nellore, trapped the MPDO, Dakkili of Nellore district, P. Unisamma, at her house on Saturday and recovered Rs. 3,000.

According to available information, the sarpanch of Patanalapadu village, P. Ramanaiah, has constructed classrooms under the SGRY scheme and an amount of Rs. 25,000 was due to him from the MPDO's office, for the last 3 months. It was stated that the amount was not cleared and the MPDO allegedly demanded Rs. 3,000. After negotiating a deal, the money was handed over to the MPDO through known sources today and the ACB officials who entered the scene as per a plan, seized the entire amount from her house. The official has been sent for remand.

Pulse polio today

KURNOOL: All arrangements were made for pulse polio programme in Kurnool district beginning November 21 to 23.

A total of 2,632 posts were set up for vaccination of 4.83 lakh children. Eighty-two mobile booths were also pressed into service. A total of 10,738 personnel were drafted for the programme, the DMHO, K.K. Sai Prasad said.

A rally was organised here today to give publicity to the programme, which started at Raj Vihar centre and reached the collectorate.

The MLA, M.A. Gafoor, said every child had right to attend basic school. The Project Director, NCLP, Isaaq, the PD, Women and Child Welfare Department, Nirmala and others were present.

Lawyers' meet held

NELLORE: Justice G. Raghu Ram of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has suggested certain norms to improve the quality of legal education, ultimately resulting in better dispensation of justice.

Addressing the 4th Biennial District Conference of the local unit of All-India Lawyers Union (AILU), here on Saturday, he called for setting up of law colleges of repute and high standards and eliminating those law colleges, 'selling certificates'.

The Judge called for the necessity to have sufficient legal skills and stressed the need for an `audit' of judgements.

Pulse polio today

ADILABAD: The sixth special round of pulse polio immunisation would be inaugurated by district Collector J. Sudha Rani, at Sharada Vidya Mandir School, Shantinagar, at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

The District Medical and Health Officer, M. Kesava Rao, told reporters here on Saturday that there were some lacunae reported during the earlier rounds of the immunisation programme so far as urban centres were concerned. He said in order to plug the gaps more concentration would be given to urban centres.

The DMHO said all arrangements for the Sunday round were in place. An estimated 3.97 lakh children between the age group 0 to 5 years would be administered the polio drops during the three day programme.

Rally held

KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Social Welfare, D.S Redya Naik, on Saturday, flagged off a rally organised by the Rotary club of Karimnagar to educate the people about the importance of administering polio vaccine on November 21 and eradication of polio from the country.

The rally was flagged off from the R&B guest house where the students of Vivekananda degree and PG college students participated. Rallyists carrying placards, banners and posters passed through all important streets of the town.

Child rights day

ADILABAD: The district Collector J. Sudha Rani, on Saturday said the Government was committed to rooting out the child labour system in the society.

She said the Government made efforts to protect the rights of the children.

Addressing the gathering of anganwadi and community workers on the occasion of the Child Rights Day here Ms. Sudha Rani said the Government was spending huge amounts on not only eradicating child labour, but, also taking care of the educational needs of the child labourers.

The Project Director, District Women and Child Development Agency, V. Ramulu said two urban ICDS projects have been sanctioned, he added.

Endowment lecture

WARANGAL: The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences proposes to organise an endowment lecture on `Emerging trends in computational biology with special reference to Vector control' on November 22.

The Deputy director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), U. Suryanarayana Murthy, will deliver the lecture at Chaitanya degree college here, the Akademi convenor, A Purushotham Rao, said.

Peace talks favoured

WARANGAL: The speakers at a symposium on `Civil society and peace talks' favoured continuation of talks between the State Government and naxal groups.

At a programme organised by the Department of Human Resources Management, KU Arts & Science college here, human rights activist, G. Haragopal, opined that failure of ongoing talks might lead to violence.

He urged the Government to look into the issues raised by the naxal groups such as distribution of land to the landless, separate Statehood for Telangana region and uplift of weaker sections which were pending for long.
