MANGALORE, NOV. 20. The annual feast at Blessed Joseph Vaz Chapel at Mudipu will be held from November 30 to December 2. Till 2003, the feast was held in January for a day. The management committee of the chapel decided to advance the feast to suit the convenience of the devotees and make it a three-day event. Andrew D'Souza, priest of the chapel, told presspersons here on Saturday that the life and achievements of Joseph Vaz, an Indian beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II in Colombo, were an inspiration to all Christians. People of all communities revered Joseph Vaz. The proof of a miracle that was said to have been performed by him in 1684 was the wells on the chapel premises. He said the chapel had a 57-foot Gothic canopy. A prayer hall was inaugurated on February 12. Various rituals are performed at the chapel on specified days, he noted. The Rev. D'Souza said the nine-day novena prayers in connection with the feast would begin on Sunday. The horekanike procession would be taken out from Mudipu to the chapel on November 28, he added. The principal of St. Aloysius College, Eugene Lobo, would conduct the "balipuja'' on this occasion. The parish priest of St. Sebastian Church, Bendoor, Peter S. Noronha, would conduct the puja on the opening day. The rector of St. Joseph Seminary, Victor Machado, would conduct it on December 1. The following day, it will be the turn of the priest of Kanachur Church, Alwyn D'Cunha.
