dated November 22, 1954: Prakasam rejoins Congress

Mr. T. Prakasam announced at the second session of the Joint Convention of the Executive of the APCC and ex-Congress MLAs and DCC Presidents and special invitees on November 21 in Guntur that he had joined the Congress as an effective member. This will make him an ex-officio member of the APCC and delegate to the Avadi Congress. Mr. Prakasam stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Nehru, there was no need for separate parties. Mr. B. Gopala Reddi, who presided over the meeting, said it was a happy augury that Mr. Prakasam had now joined them and by doing so he had come forward to shoulder a very heavy responsibility. He said that in the coming elections to the State Assembly, Mr. Prakasam could contest from any constituency he wished to choose. Coming out of the meeting, Mr. Kala Venkata Rao said that the purpose for which the meeting had been called was fully achieved. All non-Congressmen who attended the meeting had unanimously agreed to return to the Congress-fold unconditionally. Mr. Prakasam, who is expected to sign the Congress pledge formally, returns to the organisation after seven years. It was in 1947 that he was voted out of office as Premier of Madras by the State Congress Legislature Party. He then formed the Andhra Praja Party - much ahead of the formation of the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party by Acharya Kripalani. Mr. Prakasam later became leader of the Andhra KMP and leader of the Madras State Praja Socialist Party following the KMP-Socialist merger. He resigned from the PSP defying the mandate of the National Executive and became an associate member of the Andhra Legislature Congress Party on the eve of assuming office as Chief Minister of the new State.
